Speaker, Mike O’Grady

After several years of debilitating fatigue and many other symptoms, Mike was correctly diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.  This is a disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of nerves.  In MS, resulting nerve damage disrupts communication between the brain and the body.
Multiple sclerosis causes many different symptoms, including vision loss, pain, fatigue, and impaired coordination. The symptoms, severity, and duration can vary from person to person. Some people may be symptom free most of their lives, while others can have severe chronic symptoms that never go away.  Physical therapy and medications that suppress the immune system can help with symptoms and slow disease progression but there is no cure.  As Mike bravely shared his personal story with us, it became obvious that his first priority for use of his limited energy is his family.  Learning to adjust schedules, change habits and adapt to his illness, allows Mike to continue to put his wife and sons first.  His book is available, “A Dad with MS”, and supports MS research.  He asked us to watch for walks/runs/events that will be happening to raise awareness for this disease as well as funding for research.  We thank Mike for sharing his journey and exposing his struggles to us.   Let us keep Mike, his family, and all who suffer from this disease in our prayers.
